Professional Judgment in VET Forums
These stimulating Forums that go to the heart of VET practice were originally held in Townsville, Newcastle, Melbourne and Perth earlier this year.
Two Professional Judgment in VET Forums were facililtated by Dr John Mitchell, with Dr Anne Jones and Andrea Bateman. The forums addressed a challenge put in the final report of the High Level Review of Training Packages, Moving On that VET practitioners develop "high-order professional expertise" such as the ability to make "context-specific judgments".

Questions discussed included:

  • What is professional judgment in a VET Training Package context?
  • Why do we need it?
  • How do we do it?
  • How can we develop it further?
  • How does professional judgment contribute to new practices in VET teaching, learning and assessment?

A Professional Judgment in VET Forum ran each day across both the morning and afternoon concurrent sessions.

Presenter Topic
Dr Anne Jones, Pro Vice Chancellor (Education Strategy and Enterprise), Victoria University of Technology VET professionals making good judgments
Andrea Bateman, Bateman & Giles Pty Ltd Professional judgment and assessment
Dr John Mitchell, John Mitchell and Associates Professional judgment in teaching and learning in VET
Professional judgment in VET

Putting VET Resources to Work
Putting VET Resources to Work workshops were presented by some of the exhibitors. In these sessions participants explored the many ways VET resources are used to support new ways of working in VET.

Change Agents: Super and Human?
This public conversation on Thursday afternoon was facilitated by Margaret Dix, with a panel of Reframing the Future National Training Change Agents.

Research shows that the change agent role in VET is not to be under-estimated, as change agents need the ability to adopt a range of roles which could include being opportunists, diplomats and networkers. To effectively assist the change process, change agents also need an advanced range of skills and knowledge, as well as courage and sensitivity.

Be challenged, enthralled, and entertained. Hear about life and career enhancing experiences, and the ups and downs of changing the world as we may or may not know it. Theories on change agency were explored, expounded, exploded, and created.

Conversation Cafe
In the Conversation Cafe participants discussed, debated and shared their experiences and knowledge. The cafe was facilitated by 'The VET Translators' (a 2005 Reframing the Future Community of Practice).

Posters
Posters are an effective and popular method for communicating information. Poster presentations make use of graphics such as maps, photographs and charts to describe a Reframing the Future project. Poster presentations provide an opportunity for personal interaction and in-depth discussions between the presenter and the viewer.
